Job Search Myths

Myth - The resume should be my 1st step to finding a new job.

Fact - Your resume is super important. Many people think it is always the 1st step in the job search. It may be, but sometimes updating your LinkedIn or targeted networking should happen first.

Myth - I should wait until I get an interview to ask my connections for help.

Fact - Please, please, reach out before or as you apply if you have any connections. Getting through the first screener and getting the interview is the hardest part. Companies receive 150 - 250 applications per spot. That’s less than a 1% chance. On the flip side, they call in approximately 10 applicants for interviews. So, once you get to this point you have much better odds. Use your connections to clear the harder hurdle.

Myth - Networking means I have to tell everyone that I am looking for a job. That feels so public.

Fact: Everyone does not need to know your business. I teach my clients to target their networking to specific questions.

Myth - The job market is really rough right now, so I should just wait until later to apply.

Fact - Right now, there are 7.4 million open jobs in the U.S. There are roughly 6 million active job seekers. This doesn’t speak to your location, qualifications, or industry, but there are far more openings than job seekers. No time like now. Go for it!

Myth - The job search is a numbers game. I have to apply to hundreds of jobs to get one.

Fact - It is NOT a numbers game. You will likely have to apply to more than one job. But with a targeted search, customized documents, and interview prep, you will be surprised how smooth the search can be and how few applications you need to send in.

My name is Heidi Shepherd

Looking for a new position? When clients show up they are often:

  • Frustrated they are not getting interviews despite sending out multiple resumes

  • Stuck in a loop making lists and not getting things done.

  • Unsure i they should click “open to work.”

  • Frustrated they get interviews but never get the job.

  • Just laid off and do not know what to do first.

Does any of this sound familiar?

I work 1:1 with professionals to help them get where they want to be. Name an industry, and I’ve likely helped someone in it!

I love a challenge in work and play, and spend time outdoors to refreshed and stay creative.
